The Evolution of Feminist Narratives in Modern English Literature

Abstract

Feminist stories have played an important role in the re-representation of women, gender relations and gender power in modern English literature. Whether they were fighting against the conventions of a patriarchal society, or exploring sexuality and agency, social justice, or intersectionality, feminist writing has always responded to changing cultural and political contexts. This paper will examine how feminist accounts have been depicted in modern English literature and the changes in the portrayal of women's experiences, voices and identities across the literary periods. It takes into account women's writers and feminist views challenging the traditional roles assigned to women, feminist resistance to systems of oppression and establishment of alternative venues for female expression. It also examines the evolution from narratives of a predominantly equal footing and the emancipation of women to more complex ones that recognise differences as a result of class, race, culture, sexuality, nationality and other social identities. A special focus is on the development of female agency, resistance, autonomy and negotiation of personal and social identity. The paper contends that feminist narratives have not been stagnant but have constantly been shifting with the changes in the larger context of society. Modern feminist literature is thus an ongoing discussion of the subject of the individual experience and the issue of structural inequality, in which the continuity is found in the structures of patriarchy, and the possibility of women's empowerment is growing. With this development, feminist accounts have helped to expand the scope of English literature and have opened the door for a more diverse, critical and inclusive perception of human experience.
