Abstract

Tourism is changing at very fast pace and tourists' preferences are changing from "sightseeing" to "experiences" and "immersions". The increased availability of alternative accommodation, including homestay, guesthouses, farm stay, and eco lodges, has further contributed to this trend, as it offers a more authentic cultural experience and personalized service. This revolution has been taken up by the homestays, guesthouses, farm stays, eco-lodges, hostels and vacation rentals which engage in genuine cultural exchange; authentic services and unique local experiences. The impact of alternative accommodation on experiential travel and its relationship with tourist satisfaction, development of the local economy and sustainable tourism is discussed. The study is a thorough literature review to understand the various factors that can impact travelers' choices of alternative lodging options over a traditional hotel. The results show that these adjustments have a positive impact on the travelers' relationship with the local communities, in the promotion of cultural exchange, in the promotion of responsible tourism, in the promotion of small-scale entrepreneurs and in the creation of memorable travel experiences. Furthermore, the digital platforms and e-booking systems have expanded the range of possible alternative accommodation and its visibility, thus enabling the destinations to address a broader market. Even though they are becoming more and more popular, there are still problems concerning quality assurance, regulation, safety and consistency of service for stakeholders. It highlights the importance of stakeholders working together to create suitable regulations, enhance the quality of services offered and advance sustainable destination management. This study offers valuable insights for both the tourism practitioners and researchers as well as policy makers aiming to improve the tourism experiences and to promote inclusive tourism development through the consideration of the economic, social and cultural contribution of alternative accommodation. The review also points out future research opportunities related to technology integration, consumer behaviour, sustainability practices and the long-term competitiveness of the various alternatives in accommodation models.
